U.S. wildlife trade poorly regulated, threatening human health and ecosystems, study finds

— Wildlife imports into the United States are fragmented and insufficiently coordinated, failing to accurately list more than four in five species entering the country, a team of scientists has found. The effect, the scientists write in the journal Science, May 1, is that a range of diseases is introduced into the United States, potentially decimating species, devastating ecosystems and threatening food supply chains and human health.

geckoThe research by Brown University, Wildlife Trust, Pacific Lutheran University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Global Invasive Species Programme comes as Congress begins deliberating the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (HR 669), which would tighten regulations on wildlife imports. At a hearing last week before the House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife, wildlife experts discussed how nonnative species and plants can disrupt ecosystems. One case mentioned at the hearing involves the Burmese python, originally imported as a pet that now infests the Florida Everglades.

The global wildlife trade generates hundreds of billions of dollars annually. The team analyzed Law Enforcement Management Information System (LEMIS) data gathered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from 2000 through 2006 and found the United States imported upward of 1.5 billion live wildlife animals. The vast majority of the imports were from wild populations in more than 190 countries around the world and were intended for commercial sale in the United States — primarily in the pet trade.

“That’s equivalent to every single person in the U.S. owning at least five pets,” said Katherine Smith, assistant research professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University and a co-author on the paper.

“That’s over 200 million animals a year — unexpectedly high,” said Peter Daszak, president of Wildlife Trust and a co-author on the paper.

The team also found that more than 86 percent of the shipments were not classified to the level of species, despite federal guidelines that mandate species-level labeling. The lack of accurate reporting makes it impossible to fully assess the diversity of animals imported or calculate the risk of nonnative species or the diseases they may carry, the team wrote.

“Shipments are coming in labeled ‘live vertebrate’ or ‘fish,’” Daszak said. “If we don’t know what animals are coming in, how do we know which are going to become invasive species or carry diseases that could affect livestock, wildlife or ourselves?”

“The threat to public health is real. The majority of emerging diseases come from wildlife,” said Smith, who is also a senior consultant at Wildlife Trust. “Most of these imported animals originate in Southeast Asia — a region shown to be a hotspot for these emerging diseases.”

The team called for direct and immediate measures to decrease what it has termed “pathogen pollution” — the risks associated with poorly regulated wildlife trade. Specifically, the team recommended:

Requiring stricter record keeping and better risk analysis of animal imports;


  • Establishing third-party surveillance and testing for both known and unknown pathogens at points of export in foreign countries;
  • Educating individuals, importers, veterinarians and pet industry advocates to the dangers of diseases transmitted from wildlife to humans and domesticated animals.

The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Cestone Foundation, the Eppley Foundation, the New York Community Trust, The Rockefeller Foundation, the Smith Fellowship Program, the Switzer Foundation, and V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation.

Treating Watermilfoil in New York

TYRONE, NY - Biologists are back this week making sure an invasive weed does not make a comeback in two Schuyler County lakes.

On Monday biologists began spreading a herbicide to rid Waneta and Lamoka lakes of the invasive weed know as “Water-Mil-Foil.”

“Water-Mil-Foil” spreads on the surface of the lake just and blocks the sun from penetrating the natural plants below. Biologist said this herbicide only attacks the invasive weeds, not fish or lake plants.

Glenn Sullivan from Allied Biological said “It’s selective to broad leaf plants so that way the pond leaves will be untouched by the herbicide.”

County officials said for two-four weeks neighbors should not drink the lake water. Also, you should not use lake water to irrigate your vegetables or flowers for up to 120 days. Well water will not be affected.

This is the second year that biologist are treating Waneta and Lamoka lakes. County officials said the total price tag of the project is close to a half-million dollars. That money is coming from state grants and taxpayers.

This is the last major treatment for the lakes. Property owners will be updated about the results of water tests taken from the lakes over the next two to four weeks.

Six Delaware Ponds to Be Treated for Aquatic Weeds

During the next three weeks, weather permitting, the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife will be treating six downstate ponds for aquatic nuisance weeds that, left unchecked, can choke the waters, crowd out other, more beneficial plant species and prevent fishing and boating access.

the target aquatic species is hydrilla, a non-native plant that likely entered the state through the aquarium trade. The Division will apply Sonar, an EPA-registered and approved aquatic herbicide containing fluridone. Sonar has been used in Delaware since the 1980s and has been proven safe and effective for controlling hydrilla.

The ponds to be treated are, in Kent County: Garrisons Lake near Smyrna and Tub Mill Pond near Milford; and in Sussex County: Millsboro Pond; and Chipmans Pond, Tussock Pond and Horseys Pond near Laurel. [...]

Wilmington, Delaware CBP outruns invasive bittervine

Competitive runners boast of four-minute miles, but they can’t keep pace with an invasive weed species that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agriculture specialists intercepted at the Port of Wilmington, Del., on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) botanist identified a weed seed, discovered during a CBP inspection of pineapples that arrived aboard the M/V Eurus Lima from Costa Rica, as Mikania micrantha, also know as the invasive mile-a-minute weed (aka bittervine).

Bittervine is reportedly an actionable federal noxious weed that can grow as much as three inches in 24 hours, and it crowds out native species.

“Our agriculture specialists immediately recognized this weed seed discovery as a potential threat to American agriculture and asked USDA for an urgent identification,” said Zachary Pillarelli, CBP Supervisory Agriculture Specialist for the Port of Wilmington. “Turns out their suspicions proved correct. I guess you can say CBP successfully outran another invasive species threat.”

CBP ordered the container secured and issued an Emergency Action Notification for the container to be re-exported. The USDA permitted the container, which was destined to Canada, to be shipped to Canada where authorities will take appropriate action. Link

8th Pepper Pull held on Saturday in Florida

Crystal River Preserve State Park, Florida, held the 8th Pepper Pull event today, sponsored by the Friends of Crystal River State Parks and the Ozello Civic Association.

25 volunteers, one staff and an Americorps IP member roved the hammocks to pull out young Brazilian Pepper trees before they can fruit.

Volunteers came from the Preserve, as well as Homosassa Wildlife Park, Ozello Civic Assoc., Native Plant Society, Audubon, and Crystal River Middle School.

After the pull everyone ate lunch provided by the Ozello Civic Association. In all, 16 additional acres were rid of 3568 pepper plants. This brings the total acreage treated with this program to approx. 103 acres and the running stem count for Pepper Pulls to over 54,000.

This type of retreatment follows the herbicide killing of adult plants by staff and contract projects, breaking the reproductive cycle in the area. This program has become an important component of a multi pronged CRPSP attack on exotics involving staff and volunteer herbicide treatments, community education and motivation, and contract control projects sourced from BIPM (FWC) and federal grants.

Volunteers sought to track tree-killers in upstate New York

ITHACA - Cornell University is taking steps to identify new infestations of invasive insect species that destroy tree populations and have encroached on New York's borders.

The emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid and Asian longhorned beetle, tree-killers with a taste for maple, ash, hemlock and willow, have been discovered in new locations all over the Northeast. The hemlock woolly adelgid (pronounced uh-DEL-jid) is already known to be in Tompkins County. The infestation was first reported in July.

Woolly adelgids were found two weeks ago around Cornell Plantations on the Cornell campus and last week in the Finger Lakes National Forest, for a total of 19 natural areas around Cayuga and Seneca lakes, said Mark Whitmore, an entomologist with Cornell Cooperative Extension.

The university has announced volunteer training sessions to help identify and report new infestations around Cornell and in Ithaca's gorges. Link

Coastal weed may be alternative energy source

VILLAS, NJ — Phragmites, the tall reeds that grow along waterways, get no respect. People poison them, burn them, tear them out of the ground with machines and they may be a cheap source of alternative energy.

Stan Smith, of Council Bluffs, Iowa is working on a project to use Phragmites to produce electricity. They grow all over Cape May County and are considered an invasive weed even though some were planted years ago by the Army Corps of Engineers to hold sand dunes together. He is South Dakota State University graduate with 20 years experience a design engineer followed by a career in product marketing and manufacturing management.

Smith said he would harvest Phragmites including the roots, grind them up and put them into a digester where microbes would eat them and create methane gas which could be used to run generators to make electricity or fed directly into the natural gas pipeline to supply homes.He points to a digester operation at the Green Valley Dairy in Krakow, Wis. where manure from a herd of 2,500 cattle is enclosed in a tank system that excludes oxygen and is broken down by naturally occurring bacteria that produces biogas.

The dairy is using two anaerobic digesters on their farm to generate approximately four million kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy a year, which would be enough to power about 400 average Wisconsin, homes for one year.

Smith suggested using the former Ponderlodge, now owned by the state Department of Environmental Protection and called Villas Wildlife Management Area, as an “east coast lab to study Phragmites.”

Barbara Skinner, who is leading a drive to save the Ponderlodge estimates there are hundreds of acres of Phragmites growing in Cape May County and several acres on the property. She has been gathering signatures on a petition to be sent to Gov. Jon Corzine requesting the lodge building and property be preserved as an environmental center.

Skinner said $4 million allocated by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife to demolish buildings and tear up asphalt pathways on the property would be better used to restore the lodge as an environmental center.DEP is taking bids for demolition of buildings before summer.

Smith also suggested the county airport as a location for a series of digesters which could produce electricity 24 hours per day. He estimates the cost to build the first digester at about $3 million but additional units would cost $1.5 million to $2 million. Link

Army official says Asian oysters plan needs more study

A key federal official has come down in favor of raising relatively small batches of sterile Asian oysters in the Chesapeake Bay while expanding government efforts to restore the bay's native oysters. But he said he would continue talks with Maryland and Virginia officials to try to reach a consensus on a policy for bringing back the shellfish.

Col. Dionysios Anninos, commander of the Norfolk District of the Army Corps of Engineers, said Friday that a five-year study by Maryland, Virginia and the federal government had failed to resolve concerns about the risks of allowing large-scale farming of the non-native shellfish. He said more studies should be done growing sterile Asian oysters in the bay before a decision is made.

Virginia's seafood industry has pressed to go ahead with full-scale cultivation of the Asian oysters, arguing that they are the best option for increasing the commercial harvest since native oysters are plagued by disease. Maryland, however, has pushed for sticking with the native species, as have other federal environmental agencies and environmental groups.

Critics say that there is a risk of reproduction even in raising sterilized oysters — and that the foreign species could cause widespread environmental damage if it took hold. Link

Asian oysters NOT headed for Chesapeake Bay

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia - Citing insurmountable government roadblocks, the Virginia Seafood Council on Tuesday abandoned its effort to introduce Asian oysters into the Chesapeake Bay.

"Unless someone else in the state has the political will to do it, we're finished," said Frances W. Porter, the council's executive director.

Appearing before the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Porter was expected to speak in favor of a council application to introduce 1.1 million non-native oysters into the bay starting in June.

Instead, she withdrew the application citing onerous federal and state requirements, which she declined to discuss.

The VMRC board, with the exception of Ernest L. Bowden Jr. — a waterman who said he was "deeply concerned" about the decision — offered no reaction.

The decision comes weeks before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with Virginia and Maryland, is scheduled to release a report that will guide the future of oyster cultivation in the bay.

Speaking by phone after Tuesday's meeting, Porter said the states and the corps have already decided not to allow the expansion of Asian oysters, which are fast-growing and resistant to diseases that have helped decimate the native oyster population.

"In our opinion, it is wrong," said Porter. "But it is a guiding document."

Lynda Tran, communications director for Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, said no decision has been made.

"That is certainly not accurate," she said.

Mark Haviland, a spokesman for the Army Corps in Norfolk, said the agency last spoke with council members during a conference call on Friday.

Participants discussed three possible courses of action, he said: allowing the expansion of Asian oysters, allowing nonreproductive Asian oysters, or prohibiting Asian oysters in the bay. The only decision reached, he said, was to make a unified recommendation in the report. Once the backbone of the bay's seafood industry, native oysters have declined dramatically because of poor water quality, disease and decades of heavy harvesting.

The council began introducing Asian oysters — under rigidly controlled conditions — eight years ago. It hoped to convince federal and state regulators that non-native oysters are a timelier and less expensive way to boost the oyster industry.

Several groups, including the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, oppose the idea. They worry about unforeseen consequences of introducing the alien species.

Porter criticized detractors, saying they "are solely focused on the risk, not the benefits" of Asian oysters. She said the introduction of Asian oysters could help clean up the bay. Oysters act as a natural water filter.

Scientists have been working to restore the bay's native oyster population since 1993, said Tommy Leggett, an oyster scientist with the foundation. The effort, combined with more restrictive harvests, has kept the population steady in recent years, he said.

"We're seeing enough success with restoration," said Leggett, who owns an oyster farm in Gloucester County. "We're not out of the woods yet, we're a long way from that, but it's working." Link

Noxious & Invasive Vegetation Management Short Course

The second Northeastern Weed Science Society (NEWSS) Noxious & Invasive Vegetation Management Short Course (NIVM) will be held on the week of September 21st, 2009, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

This course has evolved to meet the demand and need for training and instruction of professionals involved in the administration or implementation of invasive plant management in the Northeastern United States. This course is designed for public and private land managers (parks, conservancies, preserves, forests, private parcels and farms) from Maine to North Carolina who desire a better understanding of non-cropland weed management. A huge success in 2008, the course has expanded to include even more topics. This year, pre-registrants can select from a choice of topics they most want to see included in the week long event. Other topics will cover principles of vegetation management, early detection and rapid response training as well as in-depth instruction on herbicide properties, biological, mechanical and chemical tools of weed control and hands on weed identification each day. Classroom, laboratory and field exercises will be utilized and the program is designed to encourage interaction between students and instructors. This year’s course will also offer different session workshops for novice and advance applicators.

Weed management professionals affiliated with NEWSS instruct and staff the course. This event is a not-for-profit activity and is sponsored in part by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service. To cover anticipated expenses and course training materials the course tuition will be $400.00 for a 4.0 day terrestrial course and $150.00 for a 1.0 day aquatic course or a discounted $500.00 for both courses. Students will need to cover travel, lodging and some meal expenses. The course is limited to the first 75 pre-registered applicants for the terrestrial portion of the course and the first 75 pre-registered applicants for the one day aquatic.

Inspectors at the Port of Wilmington intercept bugs, seeds, weeds that hitch rides with foreign produce

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE -- A gust of wind in Costa Rica blows seeds onto a pineapple. A light in a warehouse in Chile draws a moth into a box of grapes. A locust in Afghanistan jumps onto a military jeep.

Threats to this country aren't always from the malicious hands of drug dealers, terrorists or human traffickers.

Just last week, inspectors intercepted a foreign weed and a non-native beetle at the Port of Wilmington, one of the busiest in North America for fruit imports. Foreign invaders are also an issue at Dover Air Force Base.

Had the tiny hitchhikers sneaked through, the damage could have been severe. The fast-growing weeds crowd out and kill native plants and the bugs eat everything in sight, killing crops and trees. The changes result in a chain reaction to the native habitat.

"Once an invasive plant or animal becomes established here, it becomes almost impossible to reverse," University of Delaware entomology professor Judith Hough-Goldstein said. "It's certainly something you want to avoid, because they wreak havoc and wind up displacing many of our native species."

There is a crew of six inspectors who work for Customs and Border Protection at the port who are agricultural specialists. Their job is to prevent foreign invasions.

The inspectors quietly make about 100 discoveries each year.

Wellsboro High School (PA) students include invasive species in national contest

WELLSBORO, PA. - Some local school districts are facing impending budget cuts because of the crumbling economy.

However, one school in the Northern Tier could see a sizable financial boost, thanks to a team of sharp agriscience students who are competing in a national contest.

Melanie Sanborn first learned of the Lexus Eco-Challenge, a contest co-sponsored by Toyota and Scholastic, through the internet. She thought it would be a great idea to enter her 11th and 12th grade students who are learning about the environment.

"It's an environmental contest where students are taking things that they learned in the classroom in soil, water and air quality issues, and they're applying that to their community by creating activism plans," said Sanborn.

So far, the team has won $20,000 by coming out on top in two of the challenges presented in the contest. Each challenge puts them $10,000 closer to the $50,000 goal.

Now, they are designing a native species garden to compete for the final leg of the competition.

"We designed it using some software we have," said 11th grade student Talia Cpiol. "I decided I wanted it to be completely native, so out of the 500 trees that were donated to our school by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, I had to research each one to make sure it was native to the area," she said.

The other half of this part of the challenge involves raising awareness about invasive species, like zebra mussels in local bodies of water, and giant hogweed plants, which can wreck ecosystems easily.

"We sent out some letters to a bunch of the hunting camps around just to let them know how not to spread the stuff," said teammate Cody Owlett, who is a senior this year.

The team also will be talking to local elementary school students about how to spot and avoid spreading invasive plants or animal species.

One of them is called "Japanese knotweed." It grows in thick, with leaves the size of paper plates, so it can overshadow other plants and steal needed sunlight.

The plant can grow as tall as 9 feet. "A lot of people try to cut it down," said teammate Caleb Krick, who is also a senior. "But in like a week, twice as much grows back," he said.

"When you're walking through it, you have to wipe off your pants and shoes to make sure you don't spread the seeds." It's a lot of work, but well worth it to the students and to the school.

"I'm going to college," said Krick. "I plan on putting it towards that," he said of the share of $30,000 he might receive when and if the team wins the final chapter of the Lexus EcoChallenge.

Rhode Island town takes aim at invasive beach grass

Asian sedge is taking over dunes; eradication set to begin soon

MIDDLETOWN, RI — No one knows for sure how it got here, but one thing is certain: An invasive species of Asian beach grass that’s creeped up around Sachuest Beach over the last few years is causing big headaches for those in charge of overseeing the scenic stretch of waterfront.

Middletown town officials will take a big step toward fixing the problem Wednesday when they open four bids submitted by companies that hope to win the job of eradicating the grass. The job, to spray areas around the Sachuest Point Road dunes that have already succumbed to the fast-moving grass with herbicide, is expected to take months to complete. Once the bids are reviewed, the Middletown Town Council is expected to approve one on Thursday, April 6.

“We’d like to get started (spraying) soon after,” said Middletown town engineer Warren Hall.

That’s not a moment too soon, according to the chairman of the Middletown Beach Commission.

Rian Wilkinson has watched the grass — most likely Carex kobomugi — grow steadily across the beach’s dunes for several years now, and it seemed to grow fast last year. It’s cropped up along the campground area to boardwalks 1, 2 and 8, he said.

The low-clinging grass is easy to spot, lying low, yellow-green, in contrast to the taller, darker native grass it’s competing with. But it’s not just an aesthetic problem, he said. The grass chokes out the other species of native grass and since it doesn’t have deep roots, it will eventually lead the dunes’ erosion, he said.

“It just takes over everything else and the dunes suffer,” he said. “It seems to have dug in over the past few years.”

Town officials received approval from the state Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) last year to remove the grass. Mr. Hall said treating it could be a long process.

The grass will be sprayed with a Roundup-type solution with a surfactant and coloring agent added that will keep it from running off and will make it easy to determine where it’s been sprayed.

Officials plan to treat the grass at least three times. Mr. Hall said the first treatment in April should remove about 10 percent of the grass. The second should remove another 50 percent, and the third the remaining 40 percent.

“It’s one of those things where you don’t know how effective the treatments are going to be until you do it,” he said.

That will be the scope of this project, he said. Longer-term, though, a second phase will involve stabilizing formerly infected dunes with erosion control features, and then re-planting native beach grasses.

The project is being funded by the Town of Middletown. Mr. Hall declined to comment on the expected cost until after the bids have been reviewed.

Attacks on invasives efforts are going on at every level from the global and national down to the local, as here in Arlington. I can't find a public announcement directly from The Nature Conservancy (TNC), but email traffic shows that they have made the internal decision to disband their Global Invasive Species Team effort and fire all those folks in a few months. Arg. Here is the letter I have just finished and will post tomorrow.

Dear Mr. Tercek:

I have been a member of The Nature Conservancy since 1981. No, certainly I am not one of your biggest donors, but I have been a faithful member and I have believed in TNC’s work and given what I can. For all this time I have been of the impression that the mission of the Conservancy is to conserve nature. Apparently, I am mistaken. Recently I learned that TNC is disbanding its Global Invasive Species Team. I must have missed the survey and the process by which TNC consulted with its members before taking such a step, when invasive species are widely viewed as the second-greatest threat to biodiversity. I will forego the lecture on invasives since the scientific literature is extensive and compelling.

Apparently I also missed some process by which TNC repurposed its mission into something other than what I believed in. As my colleagues in the movement to fight invasive species will attest, the GIST has been an important and effective force in mobilizing efforts all over the world to conserve nature on the ground. I myself have found the GIST web site a highly useful resource for my volunteer work on invasives right here in Arlington, Virginia.

As I exited the Metro station in Ballston every evening and looked at TNC Headquarters across the street, I used to feel pride in TNC and in my membership. Now, I am deeply disappointed. Unless TNC reconsiders its decision and restores its support for all the invasives work, this will be the last year I am a member. I hate to end it after 28 years. But if TNC no longer exists to conserve nature, including fighting the devastating impact of invasives, then it is time for me to move on. I realize that you won’t care about my concerns and my decision as perhaps you would if I were a celebrity or a big-dollar donor, but I hope this letter gives you and your staff some pangs, anyway. Now that I think about it, can I have my money back? I’d like to give it to an organization that is conserving nature. But you can keep the interest.

Sir:

This is an open letter written to express concern about the decision to end the work of the TNC Global Invasive Species Team. The loss of this team exacerbates the losses of natural areas and their ecosystem services to the arrival and establishment of invasive species. From the negative impacts on regulating services such as clean air and erosion control to services which include habitat protection and enhancement through resource and raw material production to informing services such as recreational use, the work of the team focused efforts to encourage a wide range of disparate stakeholders to find common ground. Quietly without fanfare your team provided a focus nationally for wide ranging efforts to stem the destructive spread of invasive species.

Invasive species are a symptom of a larger challenge, the survivability of our culture and of our current expectation for life on this planet. Currently there are groups who excel at raising awareness of other crises, but invasive species issues have been for so long centrists’ issues of insiders that no one actually notices that there is any urgency. There other major issues brewing which share a similar fate, such as the increase in world population over the rate of food production yields. Boring and seemingly non controversial, with no champions of notoriety in tow, invasive species issues slumber in the cloudy sub consciousness of our public policy attic.

Without champions at a national level, there are no funds. Without vocal demands for extreme action, there are no champions; the issues of invasive species are not glamorous. Scary perhaps, but not enough for the big time celebrities which we need to fire us up as we need the celebrity stamp of approval. Invasive species are a slow fire taking place just below our daily time horizons, too slow to make an impact until too late to stop. We expect as inevitable that kudzu will cost two states 500 million dollars annually, and then we wonder why our states are going broke. But we do nothing, we say nothing, and we learn nothing, because other issues are more important having been identified for us by the chic of the moment, by trend setters of style.

We are engaged in a public policy battle on climate change without understanding that invasive species are linked at the hip to the issue. We speak of carbon negative landscapes without knowing that invasive plants make, in general, wonderful carbon sinks. Complex webs of interactions take too much time to digest, and we have no time because we are in a hurry to get to the next new thing, and therefore wind up paying for the old thing which we failed to understand in the first place. Too hard for us to assess and respond in time; too hard to prove a negative, we build costly prisons after the fact ,just as we allow invasives to establish themselves and then deal with the expense later as if they were always a problem though we knew it cheaper to react early thereby deflecting or avoiding the coming crisis.

Our political systems work by catering to extremes; solutions driven successfully from the consensus center receive no attention and with invasive species it is no different. Successful collaboration with diverse stakeholders has led to complacency and even malaise. We move quietly towards a center, while loading future costs one upon another. 22 million acres of ash trees are dead and gone, and now a few impacted residents of the Midwest wonder why, and more practically how they will afford to cut the dead trees down, as all the while the general warning went unheeded. Some say we cannot predict well enough to protect, and convince us that it is better not to try. This is the mantra that said we could not go to the moon or cure polio and were wrong.

Invasive species are crippling the environment which provides us things we need to live: clean air, soil for food, clean water, medicines, and recreational release to name a few. Invasive species are giant hammer blows of a 900 pound canary singing in a mine, tolling for the future, warning of the change which is coming. Surrounded by so much quiet desperation, we teeter on the edge of inaction unwilling to assume one more crucial issue and so we shunt invasive species to the does-not-matter-compared-to-the-everything-else-we-must-solve arena.

But the failure of our ecosystem infrastructure will be costly whether we acknowledge it or not, and ignoring invasive species will simply pass costs on to repair and maintenance until we can no longer afford to clear our canals of the water hyacinth that can curtail our transportation of goods, or until the citrus greening removes the last orange juice tree. Do we truly believe that hardwood trees, the oaks of North America are not important as a pathogen begins to take them down on the west coast? What price to lose elms and chestnuts and maples and ash and then oaks? What tree do the un-aroused suggest take the place of all that is lost? What price to pay for cooling when the hardwoods are gone?

The homogenization of the world is refreshing at first, for we can go anywhere and find McDonalds knowing that our first meal will taste the same with no surprises. But who will visit Alaska to see salmon runs with no fish, waterways covered by Lythrum, a flower readily visible in the backyards of over 24 states of the lower 48? We want a green English landscape in the desert, but after the initial view did we actually travel to the desert to see Windsor palace or did we come to see the diversity of our planet and to recognize the power of this diversity? Our activities from trade to style encourage the introduction of species much as our city development encourages the introduction of Starbucks. We trade familiarity for uniqueness in order to get efficiency through predictability. We want this sameness because it makes us comfortable. And we are paying a price which so far we are willing to pay.

But the piper will be paid. Our system of systems that regulates life on earth will increase the costs of this homogenization until we cannot pay, much as an evening of over eating and drinking will cause a payment to be rendered of the system so abused. We expect our marketplace providers of goods for consumption to lower costs and encourage them to dismiss or not consider the environmental assessment. We do not place a price on shipping containers coming in without inspection for lack of funding and for time considerations, while we spend billions looking for grenades and bombs. We blithely ignore an unidentified ant, which loves to eat electrical wiring and is headed for Houston Space Flight Center. Rather than paying to deal early and cheaply we will suffer a five minute sound bite of recrimination when we have to move the Space Flight Center, spray it with toxins or encase it in ant proof new buildings or loose its wiring to an invasive species.

Why have a plan when we can couch the inevitable in terms of our inadequacy of knowledge, an endless loop of where is the science. We are still waiting for the complete science behind the loss of the Chesapeake Bay’s oysters when we could have done something we found reasons to delay, and now we find reason to move on as if we have lost nothing off importance. We accept the destruction of our landscapes because we have become landscape illiterate. Isolated in our silos, totally depended on our urban system services, we have forgotten that these same services are built upon the foundation of the ecosystem services whose loss we no longer cry for. We have forgotten the lessons of Aldo Leopold; perhaps we never learned.

This we need an effort such as your GIST. Surely the resources can be found to continue to protect our environment by keeping the Global Invasive Species Team in place.

Hunters shrink New Jersey's wild boar population

They are cunning and ferocious, but the mysterious feral pigs of New Jersey were no match for the state's top predators: hunters.

State wildlife officials report that 56 of the bristly-coated swine -- more than half the estimated population -- were killed in December and January in the first New Jersey feral pig hunt in the wilds of Gloucester County.

The hunt was the second phase of a long-term plan by the state to wipe out the free-ranging hogs known worldwide as the ecological menace Sus scrofa.

"We still don't know how big the population is, but we hope the hunters got most of them," said Lawrence Herrighty of the state Division of Fish and Wildlife, adding, "We are going to attempt to continue shooting and trapping the pigs ourselves." Link

NYSDEC rep to discuss invasive fish species

The strange and predatory Northern snakehead fish, whose discovery last year in the lower Hudson Valley alarmed environment watchers and anglers, will be the topic of an illustrated lecture by fisheries expert Michael Flaherty on Thursday at the State University College at Oneonta.

"Northern Snakehead Eradication: Sacrifice for the Common Good," will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in Room 211 Science I on the SUNY Oneonta campus. The public is welcome to this free program by the regional fisheries manager for the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Region 3. [Date not provided]

MA towns to decide on Laurel Lake weed control policy

LEE, MA — A decision on the use of herbicides for the next three years in Laurel Lake will have to wait until April.

A joint hearing of the Lee and Lenox conservation commissions for a three-phased invasive-weed management plan by the Laurel Lake Preservation Association was continued Monday night, as commission members sought further information on the group's long-term plans and the environmental impact of the herbicide they are seeking to use.

The group's proposal calls for the use of the herbicide Diquat to reduce heavy patches of invasive aquatic plants, continued hand-pulling of weeds and a drawdown of the lake in winter months to freeze and kill weeds along the shore.

The group, which is a private nonprofit organization of local residents and users of the lake, has used hand-pulling to deal with the new species in recent years, but said the time and cost incurred by that technique are unsustainable for the organization.

The need to use herbicides, according to Preservation Association representatives, is the massive increase of Eurasian milfoil, an invasive species that has doubled in acreage since 2002, covering more than 60 acres of the 170-acre lake.

"All we have talked about is the short-term, and we haven't put it in the bigger context of how we solve the problem," said Timothy Flanagan, of the Lenox Conservation Commission.

Flanagan said he would like to see what the group plans to do beyond using the chemical for three years, and to look at the causes of the milfoil, including runoff from roads, farms and septic systems.

Members of each commission said they would like to see the preservation group present a master plan that follows the Department of Environmental Preservation watershed maintenance program.

A number of citizens in attendance raised concerns over the use the herbicides in the lake. Some said they had concerns about the impact to some of the lake's invertebrates, while others said they have swam there for years and don't want to see "poison" in the water.

Marc Bellaud, who presented the proposal on behalf of the preservation group, said the chemical has been approved by both the state and federal environmental agencies, and is used widely across the country in lakes and rivers.

"It's probably used in dozens — if not hundreds — of water bodies each year," said Bellaud.
Bellaud noted that in the lakes his agency works with, the herbicide has decreased the level of invasive species each year, while not impacting the native ones.

The hearing will resume at the Lenox Town Hall on April 2.

St. Petersburg College has massive weeding job

SEMINOLE, FL — Officials at St. Petersburg College knew they'd have to clear out a few invasive plants when they decided to build a wildlife habitat and environmental center on the Seminole campus.

But "a few" has turned out to be an extensive clearing that has passers-by and neighbors turning their heads and wondering if the wetlands are being demolished to make way for a dormitory or some other college building.

"That is not demolition," said Jim Olliver, provost of the Seminole campus. "We're removing the exotic invasives. … This is an enhancement to the site."

The college called in experts from Pinellas County to identify the bad plants and to help obtain a $167,836 grant from the Florida Bureau of Invasive Plant Management to pay for the clearing.
Debbie Chayet, a grants specialist from the county's culture, education and leisure department, agreed that the 63- to 65-acre site does appear to be decimated.

"The area's got a lot of invasives in it, unfortunately," Chayet said. "It may look like a lot's been done but we've been very careful to make sure only the invasive species have been hit."

Chayet said 28 invasive plant species were found on the property, including Brazilian peppers, chinaberry trees and Chinese tallow. "It was a pretty diverse amount of invasives," she said.

But farther back, she said, "some really nice native vegetation" can be found, including oak trees and orchids. Those are the kind of plants the college and county want to encourage. They're hoping that the clearing, which should last through the next few months, will do that by removing the shady canopy that's choking out sun-loving native species.

The prospect for success seems good. Chayet said that in some cleared areas, native plants like maples and elderberries are already sprouting.

The return of the native plants is expected to take about a year, said Jon White, an SPC engineer who's working on the project. For now the land will lie fallow while nature takes its course. Once the entire project is complete, White said, there will be an environmental center and boardwalk that can be used for classes and opened to the public as a nature walk and educational center.

Delaware teachers participate in biotechnology weekend workshop

Fifteen Delaware public school teachers met at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute and the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes Feb. 20-22 for a “biotechnology weekend.”

Sponsored by Delaware's National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) outreach program and the DuPont Office of Education, the three-day workshop was offered to middle and high school teachers (grades 6-12).

Harsh Bais, an EPSCoR-funded assistant professor in the University of Delaware's Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, whose lab is based at DBI, spoke to the teachers about his research group's work on invasive plant species [such as Phragmites australis] and the molecular biology of those species. National Forests in N.C. approves non-native invasive species control

ASHEVILLE – Forest Supervisor Marisue Hilliard, has approved a strategy to control non-native invasive plants on the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests.

Native plants can be overrun by invading non-native plants. It is this group of plants land managers are attempting to control with the approval of this project.

The project will annually treat up to 1,100 acres of non-native invasive plants using a variety of methods. Manual or mechanical methods may include the use of shovels, loppers and saws.

Where appropriate, herbicides will be directly applied to target plants using spot treatment methods. Areas to be targeted will include legally designated rare species, rare plant communities, and/or areas including unique habitats.

“It is estimated there are over 25,000 infested acres across the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests” said Gary Kauffman, forest botanist.

The decision to implement this project provides managers with the flexibility to quickly respond to non-native plant infestations that pose a direct threat to the Forest’s native ecosystems.

Some of the species of particular concern on the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests include Oriental bittersweet, princess tree, privet, and Japanese honeysuckle.

Battle to control water milfoil on Cazenovia Lake (NY) leads to new fee for boat access

Cazenovia, NY -- Village leaders have made some changes to last year's Cazenovia Lake boat launch policy in hopes of protecting the lake from invasive species, nearly doubling the price of access by adding an environmental impact fee and promising 100 percent inspection of boats.

The Cazenovia Village Board unanimously passed the amended policy Monday night, adding a $35 environmental impact fee to the $40 cost of the village's base permit for nonresidents using the public launch at Lakeside Park.

Trustees said the money would be used to cover round-the-clock inspections, with security guards from Morris Protective Services during high traffic hours weekday mornings and weekends, part-time employees during afternoons and volunteer staff in the evenings.

The inspections are part of a recent thrust of intermunicipal cooperation to help limit the impact of Eurasian watermilfoil, a weed whose presence has spread exponentially in recent summers. Town leaders have applied for a state permit to use the pesticide Renovate in sections of the lake this spring, a chemical that has had success in killing milfoil in Saratoga Lake and several of the Finger Lakes.

The eradication process will be paid for with both public and private dollars, and village officials said the increased fee would help keep other invasive species from becoming a problem in the future.

"The entire community is making an enormous investment in the health and quality of the lake," said Trustee Kurt Wheeler, who helped put together the plan for 2009. "It is reasonable that those who come to use the lake contribute as well.

Steve Wowelko, chairman of the Onondaga Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, said $75 seems steep.

"It will preclude the casual person who might come fishing once or twice from coming at all," said Wowelko, whose organization donated $1,000 for ramps at the park last year as a goodwill gesture from sportsmen in neighboring Onondaga County. "The local businesses will be hurt because people won't be coming."

Dan Bishop, director of fisheries for the state Department of Environmental Conservation's regional office, said nearby Otisco Lake has a remote car-top boat launch as well as several privately owned access points that charge $8 to $10 to launch. The state considers that lake to have full public access, and stocks the waters and manages the habitat, Bishop said.

"That's thought of as being a reasonable launch fee," he said. "In the case of Cazenovia Lake, the restrictions are much more severe. (A $75 permit fee) makes it much more prohibitive, much more discriminatory."

Trustee Paul Brooks questioned whether enough permits would be sold to cover the cost of the inspection regime. Last year, the village sold 248 permits at $40 each. The village banked this year's plan on selling 220 permits, with an anonymous lakefront donor covering the $2,200 shortfall.

"In an economic year like this, a doubling of the permit fee could yield 50 percent of what you had last year," Brooks said. "If people only fish here two or three times a year, they might go somewhere else instead."

The park will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 2 through Labor Day. In the fall, the launch will be supervised on an as-needed basis, to accommodate people taking their boats off the water.

Trustee Tom Tait said the hours could be altered to match the available funding.
"It's got to be a collaborative effort, and people will pay their part," Tait said. "Eurasian milfoil is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to invasive species." Link

Exotic fish pose threat to native species in Everglades

The small pond six miles deep in Everglades National Park suddenly began bubbling like a pot aboil -- a telltale sign of air-slurping walking catfish.

Dave Hallac, the park's chief biologist, dipped a net into the muddy commotion and hauled up a mess of wriggling slime so hefty it surprised even him. He counted out 56 fish from a single scoop.

Walking catfish, along with other species originally imported for somebody's tank or table, outnumbered natives in this shallow, shady bayhead by an unhealthy margin. Unlike giant python, the Glades' most notorious invader, these dinky denizens don't draw attention to their presence by, say, swallowing an alligator and exploding. But for park scientists, their spread is no small concern.

''This is a problem that is 10 times worse than the python, but it's all under water, so nobody knows about it,'' Hallac said. Link

Insect killing Pennsylvania's hemlocks

RICHLAND (PA) TOWNSHIP - The hemlock population around the Quemahoning Reservoir is under attack by an invasive insect that could wipe out the tree within four years, according to Cambria Somerset Authority officials.

A harvester working in a large stand of hemlock along Que Dam Road found the hemlock woolly adelgid, an aphid-like insect from Asia, in downed trees in November, said manager Thomas Kakabar.

“We've been keeping an eye out for it and now we have it,” he said. “It's going to claim most of the hemlock in Pennsylvania.”

The small soft-bodied insect feeds on young branches, which results in premature needle drop and branch dieback, according to the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The insect was first reported in the state in the late 1960s and has been reported in 44 counties as of 2005, according to the site. “East to west, it's been moving this way for a while,” said authority Chairman James Greco. Link

Invest in restoration, not Asian oysters

EVERYONE AGREES on the need to restore the Chesapeake Bay's oyster population, both for the ecological effects and commercial possibilities. The disagreement - raging for years now - is over what restoration should look like and what its goal should be.

Maryland, Virginia and federal officials are now considering whether to introduce a foreign oyster species into the Bay in hopes of saving an industry that has been dying since the parasitic diseases Dermo and MSX arrived in the watershed.

Many of the remaining seafood processors want an oyster that will allow them to stay in business and provide jobs. The Asian oyster has shown significant potential. Watermen are more divided; some are already growing native oysters they fear would be crowded out by a foreign species.

Aside from the commercial considerations, there are ecological ones. The decline of the Bay's oyster population has coincided with the decline in its water quality. Restoring any oyster - along with the menhaden and other struggling species - could do much to make the Bay healthier.

The Bay's primary environmental watchdogs, after years of relative neutrality on the subject, are now lobbying to keep out the Asian oyster, preferring instead a greater effort to restore the native species. There have been encouraging signs, particularly in the Lynnhaven watershed, that the native species have potential to rebound if enough effort is put into restoration. Link

Tennessee Governor Proclaims Invasive Weed Awareness Week

Governor Phil Bredesen has issued a state proclamation declaring Feb 22-28, 2009, as Invasive Weed Awareness Week (IWAW) in Tennessee in conjunction with the 10th Annual National Weeds Awareness Week in Washington, D.C. Waccabuc Cove, NY, Brazilian water-weed removal plan presented

Four months after discovering a highly invasive aquatic plant in Lake Waccabuc, the Three Lakes Council is planning drastic measures to remove it. A plan presented at the Tuesday, Jan. 27, meeting of the Planning Board would essentially remove the top layer of the lake bottom over an area of nearly two acres, in hopes of capturing every fragment of Egeria densa, also known as Brazilian waterweed or Brazilian elodea. The plan would cover the entirety of Waccabuc Cove, a small cove on the north shore of the lake. So far, the plant has only been found in that cove.

“I want to start this as soon as possible,” said Janet Andersen, who represented the council before the board. “If this thing is out somewhere else, the game’s over.”

The proposal is likely to go to a public hearing in March before the Planning Board rules on the permit.

Because only male specimens of Brazilian elodea have been brought to the United States, the weed cannot reproduce with seeds. However, a fragment of the weed can grow into a full plant, and it grows at an extremely fast pace, which makes it one of the worst aquatic invasive species.

“This is something which, certainly, it appears we have one attempt to hopefully eradicate,” said town wetlands consultant Bruce Barber. “I’m not sure you have a real good second attempt at it if it starts to spread out in the lake area. We want to make sure we get this right the first time.”

The proposal would close off the cove and use “suction harvesting” to suck the lake bottom into containers, which would then be disposed of. It’s the hope of the council that this type of suction would be able to capture every fragment of the plant in the cove. This may be possible because the weed appears to be contained to just the cove, and wind and water currents both run into the cove, potentially isolating it.

Ms. Andersen said that an alternative — aquatic herbicide — had been considered, but that had run into several problems, the largest of which was residents of the lake community who use the lake for drinking water. At least 14 homes get their water supplies from the lake, according to Ms. Andersen, several of whom live on that cove. Aquatic herbicide would cut off the use of the water to those homes for at least two months, not only for drinking but also for showering and other uses.

The suction harvesting plan, which requires state approval in addition to town approval because the state owns the lake bottom, would cost at a minimum about $15,000 per acre just for the suction itself, Ms. Andersen said. Additional costs, which have not been measured, would be incurred for obtaining a 400-foot net to block off the cove during the work and capture any fragments of the weed that drifted away, educating the public on what the work entails, and disposing of the material harvested from the bottom of the lake. The money would likely be obtained by the council through a fund-raiser, Ms. Andersen said.

Assuming all of the permits are received and the council can find an experienced manager to oversee the harvesting, the hope is to complete the work before the Fourth of July and before extensive boat traffic begins on the lake.

Board members asked about the potential impact on the cove’s ecosystem. Ms. Andersen said that previous experience had shown that, after this kind of project, water plants repopulated the area quickly. She also said that, while a small number of fish might be caught in the suction harvest, they would likely flee from the commotion, and that there were no endangered or threatened fish in the lake. New aquatic invaders info available at the Central NY Boat Show

Boaters interested in how they can prevent the spread of fish diseases and aquatic invaders such as zebra mussels and water chestnuts that disrupt the food chain, clog waterways and cost millions of dollars annually in control measures across the country can check out a new exhibit this week at the CNY Boat Show at the NYS Fairgrounds.

The show begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday and continues through Sunday.

The Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management will be providing fact sheets and other resources for dealing with invasive species on the Great Lakes, inland waters (streams, ponds and lakes) at a booth in the Toyota Building.

The boat show this year will feature more than 500 power and sail boats, yachts, water recreation equipment and marine accessories on display. To battle phragmites, Assateague calls in the torches

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, DELAWARE -- The National Park Service intends to use controlled burns on Assateague Island to help control the spread of the invasive plant phragmites next month.

The park service plans to burn about 200 acres during one week sometime between March 10 and April 1 to remove the above-ground remains of Phragmites australis (common reed) that have been sprayed with herbicide. It will be the first time the park's staff has chosen to fight the rapacious cattail-like plant with fire.

"The goal is to reduce the biomass, the phragmites deadened down by aerial spraying," said Ted Morlock, chief ranger at Assateague Island National Seashore. "This will help re-vegetate areas." Link

Program presenter Laura Marx is the forest ecologist for the Nature Conservancy’s Massachusetts Chapter and an adjunct professor of environmental biology at Westfield State College. Laura will tell stories of invasive insects and describe how all of us can have a part in controlling these insects. Everyone will leave with the information needed to be a set of “eyes on the ground” and a better understanding of how important it is to work to prevent these outbreaks in the first place. Single invasive mussel found in Maryland

For the first time, Maryland waters have been invaded by an alien mussel capable of fouling public water systems, destroying native aquatic life and causing millions of dollars in damage.

A single zebra mussel was scooped from inside a water intake pipe upstream from the Conowingo Dam that spans Harford and Cecil counties by a fish survey team on the Susquehanna River. The mussel, about a half-inch in size, was sent to a Pennsylvania laboratory for positive identification.

"Finding just one doesn't make sense," said Jonathan McKnight, an invasive species expert with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. "When they show up, they show up with a vengeance."

McKnight says DNR staff will post signs at Susquehanna River launching ramps to remind boaters and anglers to report any sightings and to scrub their vessels and equipment before moving them to prevent unwanted hitchhikers. Link

Scientist says he may have bacteria to tame zebra mussels

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - A New York State Museum researcher says he has created a non-toxic alternative natural means to kill zebra mussels, the invasive aquatic species that has taken hold in New York and covers the bottom of some lakes.

Using bacteria that the mollusks can feed on in small quantities, but which will kill them if they eat too much of it, Dr. Daniel Molloy calls it "a biological pesticide."

Expected to be available next year, it will be sold by the Museum’s commercial partner, Marrone Organic Innovations, based in Davis, Calif.

Earlier this year the company received a $500,000 National Science Foundation grant to commercialize the pesticide. The New York State Museum received $275,000.

Invasive plants threaten Florida's native species

In sand dunes by the St. Johns River, chain saws and squirt bottles became weapons to defend Florida's ecology.

Land-clearing crews crossed Buck Island in teams, some slicing through young trees as others sprayed herbicides to kill the fresh-cut stumps. Their targets were the Jacksonville island's 5,000 shoots of saltcedar, a fast-spreading Asian plant that long ago overran the American Southwest and is emerging on the Atlantic coast.

The project was organized by the First Coast Invasive Working Group, a collection of governments and landowners trying to control an explosion of plants that aren't native to the state. In some cases, foreign plants can crowd out native plants that birds and animals use for food or shelter.

About 1.5 million acres of Florida parkland and uncounted millions of private acres are covered with non-native plants, the state Bureau of Invasive Plant Management estimated last year.

The agency, part of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, tracked almost $25 million in state, local and federal spending in 2007 to control upland plants and another $16 million to fight aquatic weeds.

The First Coast group was set up to help land managers get money for local projects and make the most of their efforts, said Trish Gramajo-St. John, the group's chairwoman. Link

Earthworms’ Underground Invasion Threatens Forest Sustainability

Earthworms have long been considered a friend to farmers and home gardeners, playing a vital role in soil quality. However, recent studies have shown that glaciated forests in North America—forests that evolved without native earthworms--now face the invasion of European earthworms from agriculture and fishing.

This underground invasion has compounding impacts on the capacity of the soil to provide nutrients and sequester carbon—an important role as the world faces global climate change.

Kyungsoo Yoo, University of Delaware assistant professor of soil and land resources, and colleagues Anthony Aufdenkampe of the Stroud Water Research Center and Cindy Hale, an ecologist at the University of Minnesota Duluth, were recently awarded a three-year, $397,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Research Initiative (USDA-NRI) to study the quantitative coupling of the ecology of European earthworm invasion--specifically in Canada, New England and the Great Lakes region--with mineral chemical weathering and carbon cycling.

Prior to colonization, the glaciated areas of North America were devoid of native earthworms. European earthworms were first introduced to U.S. soils when immigrants brought crops from their native lands, harboring earthworm cocoons. Worms made their way to the edges of farmlands and to the forests.

In addition, these glaciated areas are pocked with small lakes; fishermen often dispose of unwanted live bait, infesting areas where native earthworms were not typically found. Unpaved logging roads through these regions also assisted the spread of non-native earthworms, as compacted soil on tires disperses cocoons and live earthworms.

“Gardeners and farmers all appreciate the beneficial effect of earthworms,” says Yoo, “However, there were systems where worms didn’t exist before and, as we have seen with other non-native invasions, there are ecosystem implications.”

According to Yoo, 10 to 20 years ago, hikers in Minnesota’s forests noticed changes in the leaf litter layer. They noticed that the leaf layer was rapidly disappearing over the years. The researchers understand why this was happening, as Hale’s doctoral research showed that non-native earthworms were slowly eating their way into the forest, mixing the litter layer into the mineral soils in the process.

“Soil scientists and agriculturalists recognize the benefits of mixing organic matter with the mineral soil in production agriculture,” Yoo says. “However, in native forests the leaf litter is essential to the survival of native trees’ seedlings. The litter layer provides protection for temperature changes and deer browse. As earthworms invade and consume the leaves, the layer and therefore the success of seedlings, is compromised.”

He adds, “This relationship has been singled out as one of the most important factors impacting the future sustainability of forests in the glaciated areas in the U.S.” Link

Deer abundance is topic of talk

Connecticut - The Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance hosted its second fall seminar on the impact of deer overabundance recently at the Weston Public Library.

Chairman Patricia Sesto, Ridgefield representative to the alliance, introduced the expert speakers, saying, “Damage to our natural areas and the consequences to other wildlife are probably the least recognized negative impacts associated with deer overabundance.”

Dr. Emile DeVito, manager of science and stewardship at New Jersey Conservation Foundation, spoke of the loss of native vegetation below the browse line of five feet and the opportunity this browse line provides for non-native vegetation.

“If you want your forests to recover,” said Dr. DeVito, “you are going to have to reduce the deer population to single digits.” Once the forest is healthy again, which could take a decade or more, the forest can support 15-20 deer per square mile.

Dr. DeVito also spoke to the need to create seed banks within the recovering forest. He recommends fencing off plots within the damaged forest and replanting those with native species to provide the desired seed source.

He spoke about the need for a multi-layered forest of shrubs and saplings in the understory and mature trees in the canopy. “The dense shade that results from these multiple layers favors native flowers and discourages non-native species,” he said, adding a diversity of plants is needed to support a diversity of wildlife.

The multiple layers also contribute to more stable soils and less stormwater runoff, according to the alliance’s release. Soil compaction from deer “traffic” and accelerated consumption of leaf litter by an invasive Asiatic earthworm were also cited as contributors to more stormwater runoff. Link

Wild Boar in Massachusetts

Massachusetts State police said a 200-pound Russian wild boar was euthanized after being struck by a vehicle on Route 2 in Lancaster this week. Monte Chandler of the U.S. Department of Agriculture said there are no Russian boar populations in Massachusetts. Lisa Capone, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, confirmed that the animal was a wild boar. The animal likely escaped from a game farm because Massachusetts does not have a native, free-roaming wild boar population, she said.

In Pennsylvania, breeding populations of wild boar are believed to currently exist in two counties (Bedford and Cambria), where pregnant females and young have recently been seen and killed. Damage caused by feral hogs to wildlife, habitat and property has been reported in the southwest, southcentral and northeast regions of the state. Two additional counties, Montgomery and Warren, have unconfirmed sightings of young and/or pregnant sows. Feral hogs are classified as an invasive species by the Pennsylvania Invasive Species Council.

Scientists Sort Out “Who's Who” Among Australian Pine Species

Invasive Australian pines that crowd out native plants in Florida present a particular conundrum. In the Sunshine State, it can be very difficult to tell the look-alike Casuarina species and subspecies from one another.

Correct identification is important to the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists who want to import Casuarina-quelling insects from the invasive tree's Australian homeland to stop the plants' uncontrolled advance in Florida. But until they know who’s who among the confusing Casuarina trees, researchers won’t be able to precisely match the helpful insects with the exact Casuarina with which they evolved in Australia. Perfect matches may be critical to the insects’ success in the United States.

To solve the identity puzzle, ARS botanist and research leader John Gaskin is analyzing DNA taken from Casuarina trees growing in Australia, where their identification is certain. He’s comparing that to DNA from the Casuarina trees currently running amok in south Florida.

Fending Off Invaders a Full-Time Job at the Delaware Coast

LEWES -- They creep in and smother the living. They're invasive species -- plants that don't naturally inhabit an area -- and they're nothing new to Delaware's coast.

And while experts say some local residents have helped them flourish, the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is taking measures to ensure they don't take too large a toll on native plants.

At Cape Henlopen State Park, volunteers are working to stop the growth of the Wisteria vine, an invasive species from Eastern Asia that has killed some vegetation and is threatening several acres more. The vine was believed to have been planted decades ago.

According to Rob Line, director of environmental stewardship with DNREC's Division of Parks and Recreation, there's something sinister behind these seemingly unassuming plants. While the vine grows along bike trails and along the park's fishing pier, it blocks sunlight for other vegetation, eventually killing other plants.

"These are ecosystem changers," he said. "There are literally hundreds of plants that are not native to the Mid-Atlantic states that we use all the time. But the ones we worry about are the ones that can go in and change an entire plant ecosystem."

The invaders

According to Line, there are a number of species that have overrun portions of land near the coast.

"The No. 1 issue that we're seeing is with the Japanese black pine tree (Pinus thunbergii)," he said. "It's commonly used as a landscaping plant."

Also inhabiting the coast is the Asian sand sedge (Carex kobomugi), a salt-tolerant plant that competes with American beach grass, Line said. And there's also the Chinese lespideza, a low shrub that often grows on roadsides; the Oriental bittersweet vine, low bushes that have been known to grow into trees; and several other species of plants that environmental groups are hoping to control.

U.S. House passes ballast water treatment standards

The battle to keep ocean freighters from dumping more foreign species into the Great Lakes made an historic advance Wednesday, when one branch of Congress passed the nation's first ballast water treatment standards.

On a vote of 395-7, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Coast Guard funding bill (H.R. 2830) that contained language requiring some freighters to disinfect ballast water tanks beginning next year. By 2015, all ships operating in the Great Lakes must have treatment systems on-board that kill all living organisms in ballast tanks, including pathogens.

The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate, which has been debating similar legislation (S. 1892). If approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Bush, the legislation would enact the world's most stringent ballast water treatment standards. Full Article

Conservationists, biologists, battle unwelcome species to save Delaware plants

The daffodils are blooming along the banks of Hickory Run, a small tributary of Red Clay Creek.

The only trouble is, they don't belong here.

Daffodils -- like the multiflora rose, the seedlings of Japanese stilt grass and the low-growing garlic mustard -- are invaders in this sylvan setting.

"We'll never get rid of 'em," said James G. Subach, natural lands supervisor for the Mount Cuba Center in Greenville.

Besides habitat loss, many private and public land managers in Delaware believe the spread of invasive species -- especially invasive plants -- is one of the state's biggest environmental
challenges.

They often out-compete native varieties.

Barry Rice, an invasive-species scientist for The Nature Conservancy, said they typically share characteristics such as a short period from germination to reproduction, produce many seeds and can reproduce both by seeds or vegetatively. In addition, they typically take root in disturbed habitats such as roadsides. Once established at the edge of a road or forest, they easily spread, either on passing vehicles or in the wind drafts from passing cars and trucks, he said.

The impact from invasive plants spreads throughout an ecosystem, according to Douglas W. Tallamy, professor and chairman of the University of Delaware Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, affecting biodiversity on every level from plant composition to insects to birds that rely on insects to feed their young.

While it is a challenge, Tallamy said, it is also an area where individual Delawareans can make a difference.

Big environmental issues like global warming often leave people thinking "whatever we personally do isn't going to make a measurable difference," he said. But with invasive plants, people can make a difference one plant at a time and one backyard at a time.

In a state like Delaware, with less and less undeveloped habitat and with fragments of forest, Tallamy believes there is an alternative: "What we need to do is redesign suburbia."

Because non-native plants often are sold in garden centers, homeowners may plant them without realizing the impact.

In his new book, "Bringing Nature Home," Tallamy wrote that habitat loss and fragmentation from farming and development have taken a toll on native plant and animal communities. Ultimately, he said, there will be no habitat left except for the landscapes and gardens we create.

By getting rid of non-natives in yards throughout suburbia, replacing them with native plants and getting neighbor after neighbor to do the same, you end up with a connected area for wildlife and better biodiversity.

Tallamy knows firsthand what a difference native plants can make. In 2000, he and his wife bought 10 acres in southeastern Pennsylvania. Over time, they removed non-natives and replaced them with native species.

Every year, he said, they can see a difference in the native insects and birds they attract.

Susan Barton, a cooperative extension agent at the Univesity of Delaware and co-author of two booklets on plants for a Livable Delaware, said a transportation department that can remove all the invasive plants along highway rights of way may seem impossible.

"But removing multiflora rose from each person's property isn't incomprehensible," she said. Then, "we'd have habitat in suburbia."

Controlling invasives can be complicated. Subach said it often is most important to understand the life cycle of individual plant species to best time control efforts.

Along Delaware's coastal marshes, where an invasive, giant reed species called Phragmites australis is a concern, control efforts can take years. First, specialized weed killers that can be used near environmentally sensitive waterways are sprayed on the vast stands of weeds. Spray is typically applied over two seasons. The spray is followed by a controlled burn of the reeds.

On Wednesday, firefighters in Lewes did a controlled burn on invasive phragmites at Lewes Beach. Besides being a fire hazard, the invasive species of the reed provides little habitat value in North America.

In 2002, a team of researchers found that Phragmites australis supported 170 species in its native habitat. It is found in Europe, Asia and Africa and researchers here believe there are two varieties in our salt marshes -- one that was introduced more than 300 years ago and is especially invasive and a second variety that is native to North America. The introduced variety provides habitat for five species.

In 2002, state environmental officials estimated the total cost of a state-landowner cost-share program to control phragmites at $168,700. A total of 2,410 acres were sprayed -- a small part of the affected area throughout the state. Nationally, federal officials estimate the cost of controlling all invasive species at $138 billion a year. Full Article

Bullhog vs. Honeysuckle

Montgomery County, Ohio — Honeysuckle, meet thy doom.

Your killer is a 6-ton Bullhog forestry mulching machine its friends at Five Rivers MetroParks fondly call a "Bobcat on steroids."

The last thing you will see, honeysuckle, on your way to being ground into mulch, are six rows of steel teeth whirling around at 2,400 rpm on the front of a machine that travels on steel tracks.
This well-deserved fate has been long in coming for honeysuckle, the green Godzilla of the southwestern Ohio woods.

It's a nonnative invasive plant that overwhelms and destroys native plant life, from valuable oak trees to expensive exported herbs such as ginseng. Conservationists, for good reason, despise honeysuckle, which has taken over park lands and private woodlots. Some would like to ban its sale in Ohio.

Honeysuckle has been difficult to destroy — until now.

At Possum Creek MetroParks this week, conservation biologist apprentice Bryan Dorsey made quick work of several acres along Frytown Road, easily grinding plants up to 20 inches in diameter. This stuff has been growing since the 1960s and it is well established.

The new machine, purchased for $93,000 by MetroParks from FECON Inc. in Lebanon, arrived for service March 28.

It is the only one in possession of a parks organization in these parts.

The Bullhog takes out an acre of honeysuckle in six hours — three times faster than a human crew using chain saws. It's cost-effective and sparing of other plant life, MetroParks officials said.
The Bullhog also works on buckthorn, autumn olive and ailanthus. MetroParks plans to use the machine on honeysuckle from November through April, stopping for bird nesting season.

Between honeysuckle session, the machine will be used for other purposes.

After the honeysuckle is shredded, stumps are sprayed with a herbicide, Dorsey said, in a routine that will have to be repeated because honeysuckle requires regular suppression and FiveRivers has hundreds of acres that need attention.

Pesticide ban has parks department eyeing options

Greenwich, Connecticut - The Department of Parks and Recreation is scrambling to come up with a plan to properly treat the town's athletic fields following a ban on pesticides instituted last week.

The department had anticipated the ban, but did not expect it until June 2009, when a state law banning the use of pesticides on all elementary and middle school grounds was set to go into effect. Not only did the town mandate go into effect a year earlier, but it also included all town, school and park athletic fields.

The department did not allocate funds to treat the fields organically, nor does it have the equipment and personnel for the job, according to Tim Coughlin, turf operation manager for the parks department. "This is a major logistical change," he said.

In the past, the department has applied one application of pesticide to prevent crabgrass, an invasive weed that, if not controlled, can smother regular grass and destroy the fields.

Now it needs to use equipment to overseed, fertilize, irrigate the fields, and get people out to attack the weeds. And it must be done now, Coughlin said, before the grass really starts to grow in May and the fields are used daily for baseball and other sports games.

"We can't wait too long. Things need to be done in April," said Bruce Spaman, town tree warden.
Spaman, a member of the Environmental Action Task Force, the newly formed group that proposed the ban, said they pushed for its quick implementation, seeing it as an opportunity

"Basically, the program was heading in that direction, but this was the push we needed to go with the organic program," Spaman said. Additional money will be needed, but it is an investment, he said.

If residents look to the successful field at North Street School, which is a model for the rest of the town, they will see what the fields will become. They won't look like Yankee Stadium just yet, he said.

Right now they are going to have to work harder to monitor and treat the fields and that will cost money, he added.

"We know how to do it, but the question is where does the money come from," Coughlin said. Coughlin will be meeting next week with Joseph Siciliano, director of parks and recreation, to come up with a plan. Full Article

Spread of cogon grass heightens risk of major fire in South Carolina

COLUMBIA - An invasive weed that already has infested more than 1 million acres nationwide continues to spread across the parched Southeast, and experts say the regions drought makes the highly flammable intruder more threatening than ever.

Cogon grass, known for its fluffy, silvery white seed heads, has coaxed its way into gardens, forests and highway medians across the region, where control and eradication programs have kicked into high gear.

Dont buy it, dont dig it up, dont plant it and just let somebody know if you see it, said Laurie Reid, forest health specialist for the South Carolina Forestry Commission. We are definitely on the lookout for it because if it happens to come into a forested situation, then thats when the danger really comes for either wildfire or a prescribed burn.

Now in its flowering stage, cogon grass can burn all year and when it catches fire, experts say it burns higher and hotter than regular grass during wildfires. Its most flammable in colder months when it appears as a tall, thick mass of brown-colored grass. But drought conditions in the Southeast have kept the weed dry and increased its risk as a fire hazard this spring, experts say.

They are unusually hot-burning fires that consume at higher heights -- up to 10 to 15feet, said Jim Miller, a regional invasive plant scientist with federal Agriculture Department. "I dont think theres anything more flammable in our environments landscape. I dont know anything that burns as hot in our ecosystem as cogon grass."

Once used as packing material that arrived in Mobile, Ala. on ships in 1912, cogon grass can seem harmless even beautiful but forestry experts in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama warn its a killer.

A native of southeastern Asia, cogon grass chokes all competing vegetation it kills off pine seedlings in forests and overtakes grazing land where most animals wont give it a second look because of its saw-toothed leaves. Experts believe the aggressive weed could turn the region into a grassy savannah devoid of all native species if given enough time. Ironically, forestry experts said, the grass has spread in part because its hitched rides on equipment used to fight forest fires.

Its actually got to epidemic proportions, said Ed Brown, a spokesman for the Mississippi Forestry Commission. I call it a super weed. I have seen it grow on some of the driest sites that wouldnt hardly grow anything and Ive seen it growing down the edge of water. Ive actually seen it taking over a patch of kudzu.

Cogon grass, sometimes spelled cogongrass, is on every continent except Antarctica and inhabits around 1.2 billion acres worldwide. Asia has lost about 500 million acres to the weed, and it continues to spread to an additional 370,000 acres each year, experts say.

Its definitely a worldwide problem and now we are a part of that worldwide problem in the Southeast because we have failed to confront it, Miller said. Florida now has over 1 million acres and Miller said hes heard reports of cogon grass causing intense home fires there. Alabama has 60,000 acres of it; South Carolina only 10, so far, according to estimates done by the USDA and Clemson University.

States, with the help of a federal grant awarded last year, are starting to coordinate efforts to study, survey and control the spread of cogon grass. Clemson University scientists plan to survey more than half of South Carolina next month. Full Article

Invasive plant in creek hinders manatees

NORTH PORT, Florida — A popular winter home for West Indian Manatees in Sarasota County has become so choked with debris that the endangered animals are struggling to access the creek.

The problem should be remedied soon though, thanks to a $32,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department.

Sarasota County plans to use the money to remove invasive Brazilian pepper trees, which shed their limbs so rapidly that they dam up the Salt Creek in North Port.

The creek, a tributary of the Myakka River, annually hosts up to 70 manatees, which move from the Gulf of Mexico to warm inland waters during the winter.

"This is a critical habitat for the Manatees and the vegetative dams limit their ability to move," said Michael Elswick, an environmental specialist with the county.

Brazilian Pepper trees grow much faster, and shed their leaves and branches more quickly, than native mangroves and pine trees, Elswick said.

"The trees generate a lot of biomass that has heavily impaired the area," Elswick said.

The county plans to replace invasive trees with native plants along a section of the creek popular with manatees. Work with begin on May 31 and last throughout the summer. Article
